Health in the DRC: challenges and solutions
The Democratic Republic of Congo faces major health challenges. Many people in South Ubangi live far from health centers, water and hygiene are often inadequate, and diseases such as malaria and infections remain persistent. Furthermore, healthcare is expensive and inaccessible to many, meaning prevention and treatment often come too late. Mothers and children are especially at risk of illness and death.
Summary of challenges
Distance and accessibility
For many people, especially in rural areas, the nearest health center is kilometers away.
Inadequate hygiene and water
Many centers struggle with a lack of clean water and sanitation, which promotes the spread of infections.
Diseases such as malaria
These remain a leading cause of illness and death, especially among children.
High cost of care
Without financial protection, families often cannot afford medical treatment.
Maternal and child mortality
Due to the lack of proper pre- and postnatal care, far too many mothers and babies still lose their lives.
Congodorpen’s solutions
At Congodorpen, we tackle these issues with an integrated approach, putting the community itself at the heart of our actions.
Mutual Health Funds: affordable care for everyone
We support 2 mutual health funds with a total of 116,727 members. These funds ensure affordable access to primary and secondary healthcare. They are managed locally, often by women, ensuring transparency and trust. This mutual system offers sustainable opportunities for quality and access to care, for and by the community.
🎯 Goal: Strengthen and expand the management of mutual health funds to ensure healthcare remains accessible to everyone.
🏥 Health Centers and 10 CODESAs
We renovate and build 10 health centers with a focus on hygiene, water, and adequate equipment. Additionally, we support 10 CODESAs (Health Committees) in managing these centers as well as other collective enterprises for the benefit of healthcare.
👩⚕️ Thanks to dynamic communities and our support, approximately 220 people are now dedicated to providing quality and accessible care, even in remote areas.
🎯 Goal: High-quality and accessible healthcare, driven by the community.
💉 Vaccination and Prevention
Together with parent committees, mutual health funds, and CODESAs, we conduct vaccination campaigns and raise awareness about prevention. This reduces the risk of infectious diseases and builds trust in healthcare services.
🎯 Goal: Improved vaccination coverage and healthier communities.
👩👧👦 Focus on Mothers and Children
We ensure safe pregnancies and deliveries, and support young mothers. This helps reduce the high rates of maternal and child mortality.
🍼 Our projects have already reached thousands of mothers and children.
🎯 Goal: Access to quality healthcare for every mother and baby.
💬 Health is the foundation of development
A healthy population builds a strong Congo. With our partner communities, we make healthcare affordable, accessible, and high-quality, but above all, sustainable for the long term. This is how hope grows — this is how Congo grows.
